**To buy our fair trade organic cotton shopping bags, click here. ** Our bags Our Fair Trade bags are handmade from organic cotton in a small factory in a village in southern India that was devasted in the Tsunami in December 2004. The bags are about 40cmx40cm with a gusset sewn in the sides and the bottom for extra room. Fair Trade We operate through a company called Vandanamu Fair Trade. They work exclusively with these under-priveleged villages, helping their people develop sustainable livelihoods. This involves provision of training, facilities to enable people to apply and develop their skills, and crucially, the establishment of indigenous and export markets for them to supply to. The following images have been supplied by Vandanamu. The workers in the factory are a women's co-operative and working with our partners we can ensure that the women that make the bags are paid a fair price for the work they do and work in good conditions. The organisation we work with to import the bags also invest in the area, by supplying solar power equipment and resources for the village night school. Organic Cotton Organic cotton is free from the pesticides used on cotton grown by other methods. These pesticides can leave the people that work in the cotton fields riddled with disease and suffering from disfigurement. |
